Retreatment

Does your root canal need retreatment? The team at Fairlawn Endodontics can help!

Although the Root Canal is a very successful procedure, sometimes a tooth that was previously treated may not fully heal and symptoms could return months or years later.

Our team at Fairlawn Endodontics understands that you might have several questions or concerns if a root canal treatment seems unsuccessful, or if you’re once again experiencing tooth pain or symptoms of a diseased tooth.

Fortunately, we provide endodontic retreatment procedures, allowing you a second chance to save your tooth and alleviate symptoms. Under our expert care, successful retreatment is possible.

Reasons for Endodontic Retreatment

Once you’ve had a root canal treatment, you can reasonably expect it to last a lifetime. However, sometimes previously treated teeth develop further complications.

When you visit our office, we’ll listen to any symptoms or concerns you may have, and we’ll inspect your tooth. Sometimes, we determine that your previous root canal treatment was unsuccessful. Some reasons your tooth may not have healed as expected include:

  • Canals went untreated, usually due to narrow or odd shapes
  • Placement of the dental crown was delayed
  • Contamination from saliva wasn’t properly prevented

Alternatively, your previous root canal treatment may have been successful and effective, but your tooth may have sustained new trauma or complications. In this case, a new infection or inflammation may be caused by new decay, a cracked crown or filling, or a fractured tooth.

Any of these complications could result in the loss of your tooth. If we recommend endodontic retreatment, it’s because we believe we can save your natural tooth.

What to Expect During Endodontic Retreatment

Our team specializes in microscopic endodontics with CBCT scans. The combination of these advanced technologies, allows us to see and treat the canals in the root of your tooth that initially may have been undetected and gone untreated, or canals that may have become reinfected through a leakage from your crown, or cavities or cracks.

During your retreatment procedure, we will access through the crown and the filling material that were initially placed in your tooth. Once this material is removed, we use a dental microscope to see the tiniest details inside your tooth so we can identify all of the areas that require treatment. This advanced precision technology allows us to locate and treat the canals so we can effectively remove all of the infection.

The rest of the endodontic retreatment is very similar to your initial root canal. We fill the tooth and your dentist will seal it with a crown or filling. You may experience some discomfort, but we expect this to last only a few days. You can always contact our office with any questions or concerns.
