Root Canal Treatment: When to See an Endodontist

If you have tooth pain, or your dentist suspects you have a diseased tooth, you are likely to be referred to an endodontist. An endodontist is a dental specialist with an additional two or more years of training beyond dental school. They are experts at procedures and diagnoses related to the interior of a tooth, including performing root canal treatments.

A root canal treatment is a common procedure that saves natural teeth after the pulp has become contaminated. The treatment is effective and has many advantages, including a return to normal tooth function and natural appearance.

At Fairlawn Endodontics, Dr. Ciasca is experienced at providing root canal treatments and effectively saving your teeth. They will work closely with you and your dentist to bring back your healthy, beautiful smile.

How to Know If You Need a Root Canal

A root canal is necessary if the pulp of your tooth is inflamed or infected. The pulp is a soft tissue located inside the hard, white outer layer of your tooth. The pulp helps a developing tooth to grow, and it contains blood vessels and nerve endings.

Your pulp may become inflamed or infected due to deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or faulty or repeated dental procedures.

Symptoms of inflammation or infection of the pulp include:

  • A visible crack or chip on your tooth
  • Tooth pain when chewing or biting
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Swollen gums or darkening of the gums

Without treatment, the tooth can become increasingly painful and decayed. Fortunately, root canal treatment can save your tooth, prevent reinfection, and eliminate pain, sensitivity, and other symptoms.

What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment

At Fairlawn Endodontics, we specialize in microscopic endodontics. With high-powered magnification, we can conduct a root canal treatment using a more precise and less invasive treatment method.

During the procedure, your endodontist removes the pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, fills the area with a material called gutta-percha, and restores the tooth with a temporary filling. This filling will be replaced by your dentist for a permanent restoration indicated for your case.

Overall, your experience will not be much different than dental procedures like filling a cavity or removing a tooth. We use anesthesia to numb the area before we perform the root canal, and you can return to normal activities almost immediately after the procedure.

You may feel a bit numb and experience a day or two of slight discomfort. We typically recommend that you wait until any numbness subsides before eating or drinking, but we don’t usually recommend any other restrictions.

Commitment to Your Health and Comfort

Our team at Fairlawn Endodontics is committed to your comfort before, during, and after your root canal treatment. That’s why we use the latest technology when treating your teeth. We are proud to use Cone Beam Computed Tomography scans (CBCT) routinely in order to provide the best diagnosis for your case. CBCT are 3D x-rays that use low dose radiation, and allow our team to view with higher accuracy what is happening in a specific area of your mouth.

We understand many patients unfortunately, are very fearful of dental procedures including root canal treatment. In pursuance of your comfort, we have available to our patients Nitrous Oxide Analgesia also known as laughing gas, and possible oral sedation if indicated.

Don’t hesitate to contact our office today. We can answer all of your questions about root canal treatments and any other concerns you may have.
